Can a Loved One Receiving Hospice Care Still Travel or Attend Family Events?

If your loved one has an important family event coming up, hospice care does not automatically mean they have to miss it. Depending on how they are feeling and what care they need, they may still be able to attend or spend time away from home.

Start with what your loved one wants. They may feel comfortable joining for a few hours, prefer a shorter visit, or decide closer to the day. Their energy, comfort, and ability to rest should guide how much they take part.

At Bexar Hospice, we can help your family think through the care needs that may affect those plans. Talking with our team ahead of time can help you consider what your loved one may need before leaving home and while they are away.

If dressing, grooming, or mobility has become harder to manage before an outing, you can learn about our hospice aide services. Hospice aides may assist with personal care included in your loved one’s care plan, helping them get ready with comfort and dignity in mind.

Start With What Your Loved One Wants

Before thinking about transportation or schedules, ask how your loved one feels about going. They may want to attend the full event, stay for a short visit, or decide on the day based on how they feel.

Think about three things: how long they want to stay, how much movement will be involved, and whether they will have somewhere comfortable to rest. Keeping the plan flexible can make it easier to respond if their needs change.

Talk With the Care Team Before Making Firm Plans

An outing may affect medications, comfort needs, or the timing of care. Talking with the hospice team before finalizing plans gives you a chance to discuss where your loved one wants to go, how long they may be away, and what should be considered during that time.

For longer trips, let the team know as early as possible. Travel needs can vary, and your hospice provider can explain what should be discussed before your loved one spends time away from home.

Help Your Family Know What Hospice Allows

Sometimes relatives may assume that starting hospice means your loved one should stay home at all times. That is not necessarily the case.

When someone in your family has questions about hospice care, you can explain that hospice focuses on comfort while your loved one continues to have a voice in what matters to them. You can also bring specific questions to the care team rather than trying to settle every concern on your own.

Keep the Day Flexible

A meaningful family moment does not have to last all day. Your loved one may enjoy attending part of a celebration, visiting for a short time, or leaving earlier than originally planned.

If going out feels like too much, the family can also bring part of the occasion home. A smaller visit, shared meal, or quiet celebration can still give your loved one time with the people who matter to them.

At Bexar Hospice, we can talk through an upcoming outing with your family and help you consider your loved one’s comfort and current care needs before plans are finalized.

If your family is considering a trip or special event and has questions about your loved one’s care, you can contact us and our team can guide you through what to consider.
